Scams, privacy and the chargeback trap

The platforms themselves are reasonably safe. Almost every real loss happens just outside them — and follows one of four patterns.

1. Impersonator accounts

The most common scam is the simplest: someone copies a real creator’s photos and name, sets up on another platform or a social account, and takes payments for content they do not have. The defence is to only follow links from the creator’s own verified profile or from a directory that verifies the link, and never from a reply in someone else’s comments.

2. “Pay me off-platform”

A request to move payment to a gift card, a bank transfer, a crypto wallet or a payment app is the clearest red flag in this entire industry. On-platform payments have dispute processes and the platform takes a cut precisely because it carries that risk. Off-platform, you have no recourse whatsoever, and legitimate creators know this — which is why the request itself is the tell, regardless of how reasonable the explanation sounds.

3. Your own privacy

  • Your billing name is not shown to creators, but the display name you choose is. Choose it deliberately.
  • Statement descriptors are discreet by design, but they are not invisible. If a shared statement is a concern, use a payment method that isn’t shared.
  • Never send identifying photos or documents to a creator. There is no legitimate reason for a creator to need your ID.
  • Screenshotting and redistributing paid content is a copyright violation, and platforms do act on it.

4. Chargebacks: the trap

If a subscription disappoints, the instinct is to dispute the charge with the bank. Understand what that does: the platform is very likely to permanently ban the account, you lose access to everything else you have paid for, and the creator is penalised for a dispute that was not their fault. Cancel the renewal, use the platform’s own refund process if one applies, and reserve chargebacks for genuine fraud — an unauthorised charge, not a purchase you regret.

If you remember one line: any request to pay outside the platform is a scam, without exception, no matter how good the reason sounds.
